When Dr. Phil’s producers reached out to Lee Lockett for help, he was happy to oblige. “I felt honored and privileged that such a standout national figure would call on me to assist in such an urgent legal matter”, Lockett explained. Lee Lockett was referring to a case that he recently handled for the daughter of a family that Dr. Phil now refers to as the “Dr. Phil Family”. Dr. Phil has been following a local family for years and has brought them on the show several times to discuss their troubles and heartaches. Mr Lockett has appeared on the Dr Phil show on multiple occasions in 2009 and 2010, and took a prominent role in supporting the "Dr. Phil Family".
Dr. Phil was so impressed with Mr. Lockett’s work on the case that he described him as a “legal beagle” and one of the “best of the best”. When asked what impression Dr. Phil left on Mr. Lockett when the two met, Lockett stated “He was very down to earth and really seemed to care about the family”. After the show, Lockett commented that “He seemed to want to talk more about the family instead of himself.” Lockett added that his trip to LA came with a hidden bonus. “I got to take in a Dodger game”, Lockett exclaimed.
After his work on the criminal case was done, Dr. Phil asked Lee Lockett, and his Associate Ian Hurley Esq., to help out on a related divorce case as well.
