Here’s a straightforward breakdown of the FR44 process and what our clients can expect:
What is FR44 Insurance?
• Proof of high-risk auto insurance required by Florida DHSMV after certain DUI convictions
• Must maintain continuous coverage for 3 years minimum (any lapse may trigger license suspension)
• Not always a separate policy – it’s a certificate filed by your insurance carrier to the state
The FR44 Process:
1. Contact an FR44 Insurance carrier – we’ll need driver’s license number, address, and vehicle info if required
2. Shop multiple carriers multiple carriers to find the best rate (many standard carriers won’t write FR44)
3. Once approved, the carrier electronically files the FR44 certificate with Florida DHSMV
4. Coverage must start before you can reinstate your license
What Affects FR44 Cost:
• Driving record (number and severity of violations)
• Age and type of vehicle(s)
• Coverage limits required (FR44 minimums: $100K/$300K/$50K)
• Whether you own a vehicle or need non-owner coverage
Realistic Price Ranges:
• Non-owner FR44 (no vehicle): Often $300-800/year depending on record
• Single vehicle FR44: Typically $1,500-$4,000/year (sometimes higher for severe records)
• Multiple vehicles: We only move vehicles requiring FR44 to high-risk carriers – this saves thousands vs. moving all vehicles
• Policies can be purchased in 6 or 12 increments. Monthly payments are very likely for most carriers.
